Compare Finish Samples

What changes when a prepared wood sample is finished?

Set up the comparison

Compare a control area, a sanded area, and an adult-prepared finished area on labeled scrap.

Controlrecord preparation
Sandedrecord preparation
Adult finishedrecord preparation
Keep the control, sanded, and adult-finished areas clearly labeled.

What you need

  • Labeled scrap with control, sanded, and finish areas
  • Pencil record card
  • Adult-selected finish and product instructions

What to do

  1. Mark the three areas and write down the wood and sanding grit.
  2. Leave the control untouched and prepare the sanded area.
  3. An adult selects, applies, and manages any finish product.
  4. After the adult confirms the stated wait and safe handling, compare the areas in the same light.

What should you look for?

After the adult says the finish is safe to inspect, compare color, sheen, and feel.

How could this help your build?

You can test a finish choice on scrap before it goes on a project.
