Rip saw teeth are filed like a row of small chisels, so they remove wood efficiently along the grain. They are useful for breaking down boards and for long cuts where crosscut teeth would work slowly.

Hand saws give a woodworker direct control over the cut. The right saw makes a board easier to read, a joint easier to fit, and a small correction easier to make.
A hand saw is a toothed blade designed to remove a narrow kerf as it travels through wood. Blade length, plate stiffness, tooth shape, tooth size, and handle geometry determine whether the saw is best for rough breakdown, joinery, curves, flush trimming, or veneer work.
Most hand saws convert a steady push or pull into many small cutting actions at the teeth. Rip teeth act like tiny chisels along the grain, while crosscut teeth sever fibers across the grain. A light start and full, relaxed stroke usually produce a straighter cut than extra force.

Crosscut teeth are beveled so they slice fibers on both sides of the kerf. A crosscut saw is the better choice for trimming boards to length and leaving a cleaner end-grain surface.
A fine backsaw for precise joinery.
A dovetail saw has a short plate, fine teeth, and a stiff spine that helps it start accurately. It is shaped for tails and pins where a narrow kerf and a straight shoulder line matter.
A larger backsaw for tenon cheeks and shoulders.
A tenon saw has a deeper plate and rigid back so it tracks through thicker joinery cuts. It gives more capacity than a dovetail saw while keeping the cut supported.
A backsaw for crosscutting joinery parts.
A carcass saw is usually filed crosscut and sized between a dovetail saw and a panel saw. It is well suited to cutting small case parts, drawer components, and shoulders.
A frame saw for curves and waste removal.
A coping saw stretches a narrow blade in a U-shaped frame. The blade can rotate, making it useful for inside curves, coping molding, and removing waste from dovetails or profiles.
A fine frame saw for tight curves.
A fret saw uses a very narrow blade with a deep frame throat. It can turn tighter than a coping saw, which is helpful for marquetry, pierced work, and delicate waste removal.
A thin-kerf saw that cuts on the pull stroke.
Japanese pull saws use tension to keep the blade straight, allowing a thin plate and narrow kerf. Ryoba, dozuki, kataba, and flush-cut patterns suit different rip, crosscut, joinery, and trimming jobs.
A general-purpose handsaw for boards.
A panel saw is shorter than a full-size traditional handsaw and works well at the bench. It is a practical first saw for breaking down boards before planing, shooting, or machine work.
A tensioned blade for deeper or larger cuts.
A frame saw holds a long blade under tension between arms. The long stroke and open frame can make it effective for resawing, rough breakdown, and controlled cuts through thicker stock.
A flexible saw for trimming plugs and pegs.
A flush-cut saw has little or no tooth set on one side so it can ride against a surface with less scratching. It is commonly used to trim dowels, pegs, shims, and small proud details.
A compact saw for thin sheet material.
A veneer saw has a small body and fine teeth that can work close to a straightedge. It trims veneer and thin sheet goods without needing the length or tooth size of a panel saw.
