What to Know About Scraping Tools

A scraper is a flat or shaped piece of steel, a plane-like holder, or a specialty tool with an edge prepared to cut very thin shavings. Scrapers are especially useful on reversing grain, glue lines, and small surface defects.

Working principle

The edge is filed, polished, and turned into a small hook or burr. Held at the correct angle, that burr slices fine shavings from the surface instead of rubbing dust like sandpaper.

Card Scraper

A thin steel card with a turned burr.

A card scraper is flexible enough to bow with hand pressure and follow surfaces. It cleans glue, tearout, and milling marks when its burr is properly turned.
