A scraper is a flat or shaped piece of steel, a plane-like holder, or a specialty tool with an edge prepared to cut very thin shavings. Scrapers are especially useful on reversing grain, glue lines, and small surface defects.
The edge is filed, polished, and turned into a small hook or burr. Held at the correct angle, that burr slices fine shavings from the surface instead of rubbing dust like sandpaper.
