What to Know About Woodworking Clamps

A clamp is a workholding tool that applies force between jaws, pads, straps, screws, or a toggle mechanism. Clamp style affects reach, pressure, jaw alignment, speed, and whether the clamp keeps an assembly flat and square.

Working principle

Most clamps convert screw, lever, cam, pipe-thread, or ratchet movement into pressure at the jaws. Good clamp use balances pressure across the joint while keeping parts aligned instead of sliding them out of position.

Choose clamps by the geometry of the assembly, pressure needed, reach, speed, and how likely the jaws are to keep parts aligned.

Parallel Clamp

A high-alignment clamp for panels and casework.

A parallel clamp keeps its jaws close to parallel under pressure, which helps cabinets, panels, and frames stay square during glue-up. Its broad faces also spread pressure better than narrow clamp pads.

F-Style Bar Clamp

A fast clamp for everyday bench work.

An F-style clamp slides along a bar and tightens with a screw handle. It is quick for holding parts, clamping jigs, and small to medium glue-ups.

Pipe Clamp

A pipe clamp uses inexpensive pipe as the bar, so length can be changed for wide glue-ups. It offers strong pressure but benefits from pads and cauls to protect the work.
