A woodworking chisel is a sharpened steel blade with a handle that can be pushed by hand or struck with a mallet. Blade thickness, side bevels, length, and handle construction determine whether it is suited to joinery, paring, chopping, carving, or mortising.
The bevel guides the edge into the wood, while the flat back provides a reference surface. Hand pressure gives control for paring; mallet blows add force for chopping and waste removal.

A fishtail chisel widens near the cutting edge, which lets it reach into corners and undercuts while the shank stays clear of adjacent material.
