Watch Water on Wood

Does water look different on face grain and end grain?

Set up the comparison

Mark one face-grain spot and one end-grain spot on prepared scrap. Put one small water drop on each and watch for the same short time.

Compare one face-grain spot with one end-grain spot for the same watch time.

What you need

  • Clean unfinished scrap with visible face and end grain
  • A water dropper, timer, and paper towel
  • Pencil labels and a record card

What to do

  1. Ask an adult to identify and mark face grain and end grain.
  2. Place one small water drop on each marked spot.
  3. Watch for the same length of time and record darkening or spreading.
  4. Blot both spots. Check again after drying and record only what you see.

What should you look for?

Which spot darkens or spreads first? What do you see after both spots dry?

How could this help your build?

You can see why end grain and surface preparation matter when planning a project.
