Compare Two Samples

If two wood pieces are the same size, can one be heavier?

Set up the comparison

Compare two identified, equal-size prepared blocks. Use a real scale with an adult and write the mass of each block on a separate record card.

Block Asame sizemass: write your real reading
Block Bsame sizemass: write your real reading
The blocks are drawn equal size. Use a real scale for mass readings.

What you need

  • Two identified, equal-size prepared wood blocks
  • A real kitchen scale
  • A ruler and a record card

What to do

  1. Label the blocks A and B. Check length, width, and thickness with an adult.
  2. Weigh each block on the same real scale and record the reading and unit.
  3. Weigh each again. Compare the readings.
  4. Say what the comparison shows and what it cannot tell you about strength or durability.

What should you look for?

Which block has more mass? Check that the pieces really are the same size.

How could this help your build?

You can use size and mass as clues when you compare materials, without guessing strength from weight.
