Groups, Clubs & Classrooms: Plan Calm Stations

Groups need visible roles, prepared kits, predictable rotation, and one adult-owned tool or assembly point rather than a crowded bench.

Back to mentor guide

Before the session

  • Prepare labeled kits and set an adult-only station for any cutting, drilling, fastening, glue, or finish work.
  • Give each station one job—sort, measure, sand, dry-fit, observe, record, or cleanup—and one completion check.
  • Plan the stop signal, movement path, material return point, and a quiet alternative for a learner who is waiting.

During the session

  • Keep groups small enough that each learner has a real role, not only a turn watching.
  • Use a completed sample to make part orientation and inspection criteria easy to see.
  • Record the group result and any incomplete adult-controlled work so it does not become an untracked next-session hazard.

Finish well

Leave the space safer and easier to restart: return materials, label any unfinished work, note the learner's actual role, and decide the next adult-controlled check before the session ends.
