One-on-One: One Learner, One Clear Next Step

A small session works best when it has one meaningful learner decision and a finish that leaves the bench ready for another day.

Back to mentor guide

Before the session

  • Choose a project or skill that fits the time, material, learner's experience, and adult preparation available today.
  • Offer a bounded choice such as intended use, label, sample order, or which safe edge to inspect first.
  • Keep a short record of what the learner personally did, what the adult controlled, and what to revisit.

During the session

  • Wait long enough for the learner to notice and describe the result.
  • Repeat an observation or dry-fit rather than moving straight to a more complex operation.
  • Close with the next skill: a more accurate measurement, cleaner sanding pass, better part match, or clearer inspection.

Finish well

Leave the space safer and easier to restart: return materials, label any unfinished work, note the learner's actual role, and decide the next adult-controlled check before the session ends.
