Safety & Readiness: Make Boundaries Visible

Readiness is not an age chart. The adult prepares the workspace, verifies the task, and decides what is released today.

Back to mentor guide

Before the session

  • Check light, footing, dust control, cord path, workholding, PPE, and a calm route through the workspace.
  • Inspect stock for splinters, unknown coatings, loose hardware, and any condition that changes the task.
  • Separate core learner work from mentor-released tasks and adult-controlled or high-risk tasks.

During the session

  • Keep hands outside clamp pinch points and all tool paths.
  • Stop when the work moves, a person is unsure, or a condition no longer matches the plan.
  • End with a clear cleanup and a responsible adult's decision about cure, storage, and use.

Finish well

Leave the space safer and easier to restart: return materials, label any unfinished work, note the learner's actual role, and decide the next adult-controlled check before the session ends.
