What to Know About Marking Tools

Marking tools include pencils, knives, awls, marking gauges, mortise gauges, wheel gauges, and chalk or layout markers. They create lines, points, or reference marks that guide the next tool.

Working principle

A marking tool either leaves pigment, scores fibers, or pricks a location. Scored lines can guide saws and chisels; pigment marks are faster and easier to see on rough work.

Marking Knife

A knife that scores precise cut lines.
