4-H Book Ends

Read Purdue's drawing and actual-size patterns as a complete source-study activity. Identify the six pieces and decide which construction questions the drawing leaves open.

Start with the source

Compare pages 16 and 17

Page 16 names two 5¼ in bases, two shaped upright end panels, a separate 4 and a separate H. Page 17 provides the actual-size patterns. The plan calls for glue and 1½ in finishing nails but does not locate every contact or nail.

Paper activity

Six pieces to find

  1. Circle the two bases in the list and locate them in the drawing.
  2. Trace the two shaped upright end panels on the printed pattern.
  3. Find the separate 4 and H patterns and compare their outlines with the drawing.
  4. Mark what is shown clearly: the 4 projects from its panel over a base.
  5. Write the question the drawing does not settle: exactly where and how does the H contact the upright panel, and where do nails enter?

Finish the activity with a source-reading note, not a guessed H assembly. Ask an adult to resolve the missing joint from reliable construction evidence before any wood preparation.
