Stage 3

Build Better

“I can look at my work, find what could be better, and improve it.”

Look closely at a build. Check its fit, square, surface, and material choice. Change one thing and see whether the result improves.

  1. 1Notice a problem
  2. 2Change one thing
  3. 3Check again
Follow the numbered steps in order.

What you can do here

  • Spot a gap, twist, scratch, or uneven finish.
  • Compare the result with the goal you chose.
  • Pick one change that could improve the build.
  • Check again and describe what changed.

Start with one clear job

After a careful adjustmentCheck the edges again
Change one setup detail, then compare the gap and alignment.

Find the Better Fit

Dry-fit two prepared parts. Mark a gap or an edge that does not line up. With an adult, change one setup detail, then check the same spot again. Say whether it improved.

Try this with prepared parts.

Use matching prepared areas and the same grit. Look for scratches.

Grain-Direction Sanding

Compare scratches with and across the grain. Which surface would you choose for your project, and why?

Keep a label beside each prepared zone so the comparison makes sense later.

Finish Test Labels

Keep preparation, treatment, and date beside each sample so you can judge the result later.

Make useful labels

You’re ready for the next stage when…

  • You can name a quality problem in a real or practice build.
  • You can choose one useful change and say why.
  • You can compare before and after without claiming more than you observed.

Once you can judge and improve a build, you’re ready to make more of the design decisions yourself.
