Safety gear either shields the body, reduces exposure, or improves control of the workpiece. The most useful safety setup combines personal protection with sound machine setup and workholding.

A face shield protects against larger chips and fragments. It is commonly used at the lathe, grinder, and during aggressive carving or wire brushing.
A hand-control tool for feeding stock safely.
Push sticks and push blocks keep hands away from blades and cutters while maintaining downward and forward pressure on the work.
A flexible hold-down or hold-in device.
A featherboard presses stock against a fence or table before the cutter. It helps prevent wandering and can reduce kickback risk when used correctly.
A barrier or control built for a specific tool.
Blade guards, riving knives, cutter guards, and shields help control contact and debris. They should be adjusted to the operation, not removed out of habit.
Emergency equipment for the shop.
A first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and safe rag storage prepare the shop for injuries, sparks, finish fires, and oily-rag heat buildup.
